About Bargain Books:  A "bargain book" is a specific term used in the publishing industry to designate new, unread books that the publisher sells at a discount for various reasons.  Often, they are overstock items or returns from retailers. 

To designate that specific books qualify for this status, publishers often mark these books before selling them to ensure that they are not returned for credit.  Most often, the mark may be a line drawn through the UPC or a line or dot drawn across the bottom width of the book.
