Fall 2008

Why is the sky blue?
Teaching children to appreciate science and nature is as simple, and as complicated, as encouraging their curiosity.
Ask Questions. When your child asks you how things work, it shows that he is thinking analytically. Ask your children questions in return to get them to think about what the answer might be and lead them towards the correct answer. This will help them think critically as well as gain confidence in their own ability to solve problems.
Hands-On Experience. Simple hands-on projects can help children learn science and increase their understanding of scientific ideas. It doesn't need to involve a messy exploding volcano or erupting beakers. A simple walk in the woods to identify leaves or bugs will provide the same benefits.
Focus. Too much information can be confusing to someone learning a new subject. It helps to pick a few topics at first, and allow your child to learn about them in more depth.
Find the Right Activities. All children have unique interests and will respond differently to varying science activities. Pay attention to cues from your child and ask her to select an activity. One child may want to know how water makes its way into faucets, while another may prefer to plant flower seeds. The more you direct your activities to your child's interests, the more she will learn and the more fun she will have.
Let us do the work for you! We have put together some items which would make great gifts for a variety of occasions, including birthdays, new baby gifts sibling gifts and more.

The
10 Basic Principles of Good Parenting
by
For the most part, parenting is something we just do, without really giving it much thought," says Laurence Steinberg, one of the country's most distinguished psychologists. Most of us parent by instinct, he says, but with a better understanding of what works when you parent, and why, your instincts will get better and so will your ability to cope with the unique challenges -- and joys -- of being a parent.
